Deal Announcement: “Where the Power Is: Indigenous Perspectives on Northwest Coast Art”

Published in partnership with the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, Where the Power Is grew from the visits of dozens of contemporary First Nations knowledge-holders—including Dempsey Bob, 7idansuu—James Hart, Ts̱ēmā Igharas, and Nakkita Trimble—to the UBC Museum of Anthropology, where they engaged with extraordinary works of historical Northwest Coast art that transcend the category of “art” or “artifact.” The hundreds of striking photos and  deeply insightful, often personal commentaries speak to the continued roles of “art” in Northwest Coast Peoples’ governance and relationships to their territory, Indigenous experiences of reconnection and reclamation, and the critical conversation around museums’ roles in all of this. Where the Power Is releasing Fall 2021.
