Introducing Jennifer Smith as Associate Publisher

Figure 1 Publishing is proud to welcome Jennifer Smith as Associate Publisher. Smith is a seasoned publishing professional with more than twenty years’ experience, most recently as Publisher of Wiley Canada. She draws on an extensive network of Canadian and international authors and partners to bring exceptional new cultural, culinary, and corporate projects to Figure 1.

“We feel enormously blessed to have Jennifer lead our publishing program in the east,” says Chris Labonté, Publisher and President of Figure 1. “She is a consummate professional, a gifted publisher, and a terrific human being. She is exactly what we were looking for—a fantastic Toronto-based publisher who could help us build a remarkable publishing program throughout Central and Eastern Canada.”

As publisher at Wiley, Smith signed a number of publishing partnerships, most notably a multi-book deal with VANOC which included the bestselling With Glowing Hearts: The
Official Commemorative Book of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Under Smith’s leadership, Wiley Canada developed the largest business book publishing program in Canada.

“From our very first conversation I was impressed with the vision Chris has created for Figure 1,” says Smith. “Beautiful, category-leading books published through powerful partnerships is a model that has succeeded brilliantly in this highly competitive market. Figure 1 has assembled a team of the best talent in the business—I’m privileged to have the opportunity to work with them.”

Dating back to her days at Macmillan Canada, and continuing through her time at CDG Books and Wiley, Smith has a long history in culinary publishing including partnerships with Heart and Stroke Foundation, Chatelaine magazine, and Fresh Restaurants.

“Jennifer Smith is a force and as such is a perfect fit for Figure 1, a dynamic team of go-getters that has pulled together a successful program of well-crafted and extremely saleable books in what feels like no time flat,” says Paddy Laidley, Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing at Raincoast Books. “I look forward to seeing what comes next.”
