Deal Announcement: “Theatrum Mundi: Masks and Masquerades in Mexico and the Andes”

Theatrum Mundi: Masks and Masquerades in Mexico and the Andes is a comprehensive exploration of the traditions of mask-making in the lands known to European colonizers as the “New World.” This authoritative and exciting ethnographic study celebrates over five hundred years of the art and craft of masks in Mexico and the Andes, offering insight into their role in ritual and festivals and as wellsprings of cultural resilience and resistance. The culmination of decades of research by Dr. Anthony Shelton, director of UBC’s Museum of Anthropology, the text is complemented by his field work photographs and by images from a wide variety of collections, including the Museum of Anthropology, the National Museum of Mexico and the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka. Releasing fall 2021.
