My Thali Receives Gourmand Global Cookbook Award
We are delighted to announce that My Thali: A Simple Indian Kitchen has received the 2023 Gourmand World Cookbook Award in the India category.
My Thali, by Joe Thottungal with Anne DesBrisay, was shortlisted alongside four other titles in the category, and Chef Joe’s book was announced as the winner at the official ceremony in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“Thanks to you, the world of food knows more about thali,” the announcer said, as he presented Chef Joe with the award.
The book features Chef Joe’s favorite home-cooked recipes and stories from his homeland of Kerala, connecting past and present in the world of Indian cooking today. This exploration of food heritage features a collection of 85 signature recipes—from simple raitas to nourishing dals and fragrant curries—that can be easily re-created at home, using accessible ingredients and everyday cooking equipment, and without any compromise to flavor or authenticity.
“This achievement not only makes me proud as an Indian but also as a Canadian. It’s wonderful to hear that my cookbook has been recognized on an international level,” Joe said in a social media post following his win. “It is a testament to talent and hard work by my team who worked on this project.”
