Deal Announcement: People of the Watershed

In People of the Watershed: Photographs by John Macfie, Paul Seesequasis—a nîpisîhkopâwiyiniw (Willow Cree) curator, writer, and journalist—expands on the work he has undertaken with the Indigenous Archival Photo Project and his celebrated 2019 book Blanket Toss Under Midnight Sun.

This collection of more than 100 photographs taken by settler John Macfie in the 1950s and 1960s as he worked for the Department of Lands and Forests shows the adaptability and survivance of Anishinaabe, Cree and Oji-Cree communities of the Hudson Bay watershed during a period of dramatic change. Macfie’s photos also illustrate the pleasures of ways of life firmly rooted in the land.

People of the Watershed is co-published with the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and features a foreword by director Sarah Milroy.

The accompanying exhibit is part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.

Coming Spring 2024.
